REARVIEW MIRROR: 1983 Hurst/Olds

The Right Car at the Right Time — Even if it wasn’t a True Muscle Car

With our previous post about the new Hurst HEMI Hauler truck, we thought a retrospective look at a car the company did nearly 30 years ago would be appropriate – the 1983 Cutlass-based Hurst/Olds. The mid-Eighties were strange times for performance car fans. The glory days of the muscle car era were only about 15 years earlier, but when they ended, an entirely new mentality overtook the public consciousness. A little more than a decade later, the good old days might well have been ancient history, as cars changed profoundly and fundamentally.

Front-wheel drive, fuel injection and ads that touted miles per gallon rather than miles per hour were the norm in the 1980s. The few models that had performance intents were next-generation cars with McPherson strut suspensions, turbochargers and dashboards that looked like circuit boards. Then there was the 1983 Hurst Olds.

Only 3,001 examples were built (201 sold in Canada), all of them black with a silver lower body and red dividing stripe. Special badges, door graphics, a rear spoiler and styled steel wheels were part of the striking exterior package. All of the cars came off Olds’ assembly line in Lansing, Mich., and then shipped about 45 miles away to secondary manufacturer Cars and Concepts, which changed each Cutlass into a Hurst model. Each carried the order code W-40. T-Tops were an $825 option and a power moon roof was offered, too.

Performance-wise, every Hurst Olds packed at four-barrel-fed, 180-horsepower 307-cubic-inch engine, a Hydra-Matic 200-4R overdrive transmission and a 3.73 rear axle. Along with its 180 horses was a solid 245 lb.-ft. of torque. It was a combination good for 16-second quarter-miles and 0-60 sprints of about 9 seconds.

The performance may not have set the drag strip on fire, but the Hurst Lightning Rod shifter system gave the car a unique, signature feature that looked wild and worked quite well. Essentially a mechanical version of the electronically controlled manual-shift automatics used in many cars today, the Lightning Rod shifter enabled the driver to use a separate shifter for each up-shift.

After a successful run in 1983, the Hurst Olds returned in 1984 with a silver-over-black paint scheme that was essentially a reversal of the first-year model. The only real product difference was the changed to a larger, 8.5-inch rear axle. Production increased to 3,500 units. From a desirability standpoint, the slightly lower production and more striking paint scheme gives the 1983 models the nod. The silver ’84 cars have all the goods and look strong, but it’s hard to beat the all-business aesthetic of the black 1983 cars. They just look like special-edition performance cars.

Hurst Announces “HEMI Hauler” Ram

Specialty Performance Truck will be Limited to 50 Copies

Hurst Performance Vehicles, a company synonymous with more than 50 years of experience creating high-performance muscle cars and performance parts, announced it has begun designing and fabricating parts for its newest project: the Hurst HEMI Hauler — performance-riented, limited-dition supercharged RAM 1500.

Beginning with a 2011 Regular Cab Sport R/T RAM 1500 as their base, the technicians at Hurst will modify the truck with a series of cosmetic accessories and performance parts to not only make the truck faster, but also look good going fast, as well. Notably, the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 receives supercharger and polished custom exhaust. The exterior will feature Hurst graphics fenders, doors and bed, as well as Hurst badges on the grill and tailgate. The wheels remain factory 22″ forged aluminum polished rims, but are given the Hurst treatment, with a custom paint job on the interior spokes.

Inside, the seating surfaces will feature red top-stitching and an embroidered Hurst logo in the headrests, while a Hurst-signature “Pistol-Grip” billet aluminum anodized shifter links to the six-speed transmission. Also inside, there will be an interior dash plaque verifying the truck’s provenance as an officially modified Hurst vehicle. Only 50 of these special trucks will be built by Hurst each year. Each comes with a signed Certificate of Authenticity and signatures in the cab from the Hurst Team for added collectability.

QUICK PIC: Flip-Top Ford is Flopper-Style Fun

Spotted at a Seattle-area event, this Vintage Ford F-100 takes the pro-street thing to the next level, with a funny car-style flip-up body. You can do that sort of thing with the 1961-63 “unicab” trucks, which melded the bed and cab into a single body. It was a good idea on paper that didn’t translate well in reality, because it eliminated flexibility when loaded down with a heavy cargo load. The structure between the cab and bed was notoriously prone to rusting, too. Nevertheless, this enthusiast’s creative and obviously labor-intensive vision was executed well. Looks like a dual-quad SOHC engine between the frame rails, too. Cool.

AMC Characters are the Bad Guys in “Cars 2”

Gremlin and Pacer Characters aim to Thwart Lightning McQueen this Summer

The U.K.-based movie site HeyUGuys has posted some official shots of the lead characters in this summer’s Cars 2. The sequel takes place in Europe and centers on an F1-style racing series, but the bad guys in the movie will be characters based on the AMC Gremlin and Pacer — named, appropriately enough, Grem and Acer. The first Cars animated film was a treat for car enthusiasts of all ages, but that was about six years ago. Here’s to hoping the sequel will match the detail of the first. You can see more of the new characters here: http://www.heyuguys.co.uk/2011/02/03/meet-two-more-cars-2-characters-grem-acer/

Mr. Goodwrench is Dead

GM Scraps Longstanding Goodwrench Brand for “Certified Service”

Starting today, GM dealership service departments will no longer use the Goodwrench brand name. It’s been replaced by the corporation’s new, brand-specific Certified Service initiative. That means Chevy dealers offers Chevrolet Certified Service, Buick dealers have Buick Certified Service, etc. GM says the idea behind Certified Service was to improve the service experience of customers, who have increasingly sought non-dealership service centers for repair work. Part of the Certified Service system includes a new pricing strategy that should make the dealerships more competitive with independent service centers. With luck, that will mean more competitive parts prices, too, which have long been among the top complaints of customers. The move also aligns with GM’s desire to strengthen the identities of its four remaining brands.

VIDEO: Smokin’ Solstice

LS7-Powered Pontiac Performs Perfect Burnouts

OK, so the video is an unabashed promo for the shop that built the car, Thomson Automotive, near Detroit — www.thomsonautomotive.com — but that doesn’t diminish the aweseomeness of the tire abuse brought on when a 600+hp LS7 is shoehorned into the compact Solstice chassis. The car looks like ball of ticket-accumulating fun!

CAR SPOTTING: Mopars in Michigan

Dodge Classics Hiding in Plain Sight throughout the Wolverine State

Although it would be hard to believe this month, Michigan isn’t always buried in snow. While on long weekend drive on the state’s backroads last summer, we stumbled upon Mopar after Mopar in rural areas. Our favorite would have to be the big, ol’ Power Wagon, which had surprisingly good sheet metal for a Michigan truck. A late-model Cummins diesel swap would transform that classic truck — and the same goes for the vintage tow truck. Check out the gallery for all the photos.
